Staying healthy is a commitment that takes many forms. We know that a healthy lifestyle includes a diet that is full of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as whole grains and lean protein. Fresh fish, like salmon and trout, provides key Omega-3 fats that are great for the heart. Add in nuts like almonds and walnuts for extra protein and more healthy fats and you’ll have a nutritional plan that is sound.
What other ways can we stay healthy? Exercise is the activity everyone talks about but not everyone does on a regular basis. Yet a constant commitment to exercise is one of the keys to staying healthy. It keeps our muscles strong and our heart pumping. Exercise will also help keep our blood pressure under control and our weight within reasonable limits.
As family members and parents, it’s up to all of us to instill healthy habits in our children. Many parents today may feel like throwing up their hands as far as teaching their children and teenagers the keys to a healthy lifestyle, yet it’s critical that children learn from the parents how to stay healthy and well.

Our teenagers, especially, need guidance as far as eating a healthy diet and avoiding the major junk food temptations that surround them. As our children development and prepare for life beyond high school, some lessons in the realities of binge drinking and the dangers of drunk driving also must be discussed. The issue of teen pregnancy is also another major issue that can affect a young person’s health and welfare, as well as their social development.
